The Legacy of the UNGA Science Summit – A Historical Overview

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Science Summit has emerged as a crucial platform for addressing global challenges through scientific collaboration and innovation. The summit brings together world leaders, scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss and strategize on pressing global issues, particularly those outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Recognizing the need for a structured integration of science in policymaking, especially against the backdrop of complex challenges like climate change and public health crisis, the UNGA increasingly incorporated science and technology into its discussions. Addressing these issues required not only political, but also a deep understanding of scientific principles and evidence-based solutions. It was not until the mid-2010s that the idea of a dedicated Science Summit gained momentum.

The Summit traces its origins back to the inaugural Global Science Summit held at the European Parliament in 2013. This landmark event featured keynote speeches by iconic figures such as Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, and Mae Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space and the first Black female commander of the Space Shuttle. The summit, launched by Ireland's Prime Minister, An Taoiseach Enda Kelly, was the largest event ever hosted within the European Parliament, marking a significant milestone in global scientific dialogue.

Adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provided a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity, both for the current and the future. At the core of this agenda are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), representing an urgent call to action for all countries—both developed and developing—within a global partnership framework. These goals emphasize the necessity of ending poverty and other deprivations alongside strategies that enhance health and education, reduce inequality, spur economic growth, tackle climate change, and strive to protect our oceans and forests. This comprehensive approach to global development forms an integral part of the ongoing dialogue at the Science Summit.

Landcent had the distinct privilege of participating in the opening week of the 9th Science Summit at the 78th United Nations General Assembly last year. The summit focused on enhancing the role of science in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During the event, Landcent actively contributed by engaging in panel discussions, delivering impactful keynotes, and networking with key policymakers within the UN ecosystem. Landcent’s participation in the summit solidified its role as a key player in the broader UN agenda, directly contributing to the global pursuit of sustainable development by 2030.

Since its inception, the UNGA Science Summit has grown in prominence and impact. One of the key achievements of the UNGA Science Summit has been its ability to bridge the gap between science and policy. By providing a forum for direct interaction between scientists and decision-makers, the summit has helped to ensure that scientific evidence is more effectively integrated into the global policy agenda. This has led to the development of more informed and evidence-based policies that are better equipped to address the complex challenges facing the world today.

As the UNGA Science Summit continues to evolve, its importance is likely to grow even further. The challenges of the 21st century require innovative solutions and unprecedented levels of global cooperation. By bringing together the best minds from around the world, the UNGA Science Summit is playing a vital role in charting a path toward a more sustainable and equitable future. It serves as a reminder that science is not just a tool for understanding the world but also a powerful force for shaping it.
