Landcent at the 79th UNGA Science Summit 2024

As the global community gathers for the 79th UN General Assembly Science Summit, Landcent is set to lead critical discussions on integrating Indigenous knowledge into global healthcare solutions. This year’s summit, themed "Indigenous Knowledge for Global Health Solutions," aims to focus on advancing scientific collaboration to tackle global health challenges. Key themes include accelerating innovation in disease control, sustainable healthcare solutions, and strengthening global health security. Leaders from various sectors will discuss breakthroughs in research, collaborative efforts, and policy advancements aimed at improving health outcomes worldwide.

Landcent’s participation underscores its commitment to advancing equitable health solutions and promoting sustainable development through innovation and collaboration.

Empowering African Leadership in Policy Development: A key focus of this year’s session, ‘Harnessing African Leadership, Artificial Intelligence, and Policy Development for Equitable Impact’ is on ensuring that African voices are central in shaping healthcare policy on the use of AI and Indigenous knowledge systems. African leaders, scholars, and Indigenous communities will take active roles in developing and recommending policies that integrate Indigenous health knowledge with AI-driven healthcare innovations. These policies are intended to enhance global health outcomes while ensuring that custodians of traditional knowledge play a pivotal role in the application and dissemination of their expertise.

White Paper on Policy Recommendations: In the forthcoming weeks Landcent has scheduled the publication of a comprehensive white paper. This document will deliver detailed insights and policy recommendations on integrating Indigenous knowledge systems with artificial intelligence in healthcare. It will outline actionable steps for governments, healthcare institutions, and global organizations to recognize and empower African Indigenous practices in policymaking. Further, it will provide a framework for equitable access, benefit-sharing, and data sovereignty, ensuring that Indigenous communities directly benefit from innovations born from their traditional knowledge.

Highlighting African-Led Solutions: Keynote addresses from leaders such as H.E. Amb. Cessouma Minata Samete (African Union Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development) and Dr. Mosoka P. Fallah (Acting Director for the Science and Innovation Directorate at Africa CDC) will highlight how Africa’s contributions to global health are being shaped by Indigenous wisdom and modern technological tools. Professor Motlalepula Matsabisa (Professor of Pharmacology and Director – Research & Teaching, University of the Free State) and Peter Atadja, Landcent’s Chief Scientific Officer, will present ongoing research on how integrating traditional African medicinal knowledge with AI can accelerate medical discoveries and enhance global healthcare outcomes.

Future-Ready Policy: The summit will include discussions on the ethical frameworks necessary for integrating Indigenous knowledge into global health strategies. Key topics will include access and benefit-sharing, data sovereignty, and the creation of inclusive funding models.

Led by prominent figures from science, policy, and Indigenous communities, these conversations aim to translate dialogue into actionable strategies, ensuring that Indigenous knowledge contributes meaningfully and sustainably to global health policies. This initiative marks a significant advancement, particularly for marginalized communities who stand to gain the most from these integrated health solutions.
