Women in Science: Overcoming Challenges and Shaping the Future
Women have long been powerful catalysts for change and innovation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Their contributions—from life-saving medical discoveries to groundbreaking advancements in public health—have shaped our modern world. Yet, despite growing visibility and recognition, women in STEM often still face hurdles such as underrepresentation, unconscious bias, and the challenge of balancing personal and professional commitments.
However, these challenges also pave the way for resilience and community-building. In a recent conversation, Dr. Svetlana Ryazanskaya Randle, Director of Discovery & Innovation at Landcent, shared her perspective: “By creating supportive networks and focusing on collaborative problem-solving, women in STEM can navigate obstacles more effectively and cultivate environments that empower future generations of researchers and innovators.”
She also offered advice for young women entering the STEM field: “Elevate and support one another, be bold, take risks, and always think outside the box. Believe in yourself, seek mentors and allies, and celebrate every success along the way. But remember, failure is not a setback—it is an opportunity to learn and grow. Together, we can build a future where everyone has access to the healthcare and opportunities they deserve.”
Dr. Ryazanskaya Randle also expressed her passion for creating meaningful impact through science: “Every day, I am driven by curiosity and a passion for discovery—both of which feel even more fulfilling when I see our work making a difference in disease prevention on a global scale. We must challenge gender bias, build supportive networks, and remain focused on both personal and professional growth. I envision a future where global health equity is at the core of everything we do, where STEM plays a vital role in eliminating diseases driven by poverty—a world where no one is left behind.”

Landcent recognizes the unwavering dedication of women and is committed to fostering an inclusive culture where every voice is valued. By providing equal opportunities, we ensure that women are empowered to lead, innovate, and collaborate.
We honour the collective efforts of women in STEM who break barriers and advance our shared understanding of science. Each woman’s contribution—from lab bench experiments to field-based interventions—has the power to transform health outcomes globally. By advocating for equal opportunities in education, leadership, and collaboration, we edge closer to a future where everyone has access to the healthcare and resources they deserve. Ultimately, it is the synergy of every individual’s effort that accelerates progress toward a healthier, more equitable world.
