Inside UNGA 79: Bold Strategies That Will Define Our Future

A Progressive Agenda

Each year, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) stands as a cornerstone of global diplomacy, bringing together leaders from its 193 member states to address the planet’s most pressing issues. This key meeting serves as a platform for international policymaking and norm-setting, and as a space for multilateral collaboration aimed at navigating a rapidly changing world.

The 79th session of the UNGA Science Summit is taking place from September 10-28, 2024, at the UN Headquarters in New York. This year's agenda is particularly robust, featuring key events like the Summit of the Future, Global Goals Week, and critical discussions on antimicrobial resistance and sea-level rise.

With a strong emphasis on multilateralism and sustainable development, the assembly aims to catalyze discussions and initiatives that pave the way for a sustainable future. Under the leadership of President H.E. Mr. Philemon Yang, the event is dedicated to not only responding to current crisis, but also setting a progressive agenda for the generations to come.

A Vision for 2024

As international leaders gather, the focus sharpens on the urgent advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) amid mounting obstacles. This event aims to catalyze international cooperation and innovation to steer through an ever-evolving global landscape.

Designed to foster worldwide partnerships and innovations to navigate the shifting terrains of the global landscape, the Summit will bridge the gap between science and policy, emphasizing the importance of scientific innovation in shaping effective and sustainable global policies.

The upcoming UNGA Science Summit, particularly during Global Goals Week, offers a critical opportunity for a strategic reassessment and renewed commitment to the SDGs. Despite some progress, only 17% of SDG targets are currently on track, underscoring the urgent need for intensified efforts.

Anticipation builds for the Summit of the Future, which represents a historic opportunity to redefine international cooperation. It aims to mend the eroded trust among nations and demonstrate that collective action can address both current and emerging global challenges.

The Summit of the Future will focus on producing actionable outcomes through the Pact for the Future—a document set to encapsulate commitments from nations to address and adapt to pressing global issues and laying down a roadmap for post-2030 global governance.
